Flying To Food

A great tradition for Cyberflight pilots, as well as for pilots everywhere is "Flying to Food." Whether one calls it the "Quest for the $50.00 Hamburger" or something else, it is essentially Flying to Food. Of course, this is not to be confused with the corporate pilots and commercial pilots who fly FOR food. They would become most annoyed and irate if anyone were to suggest a comparison between we piddly little private pilots and their great god like stature. Our wrists could not hold their MaNLy watches.
If you get lost trying to get to any of these airports, we can help you with Airport and Nav Aid Information
Our favorite fly-in restaurants are as follows:
- Gaithersburg, Montgomery Airpark
- Montgomery Airpark is located on the FDK 155 degree radial and has a wonderful cafe, thoughtfully called the Airport Cafe. Their food is quite good, reasonably priced, and we frequent there often. Montgomery is an uncontrolled field that can turn into quite a zoo on weekends, so announce your position early and often. Tell them you saw them on the CyberFlight Web Page. But PLEASE remember that Gaithersburg is within the evil ADIZ. DO NOT come here without filing an ADIZ flight plan. Thank you for not being on CNN.
- Lancaster, Pennsylvania
- Lancaster Airport has its own VOR on the field, so even Mikki can find it. The restaurant is known for its milkshakes and way cool deserts. Beware of students doing solos since tons of DC area CFI's send their students to Lancaster.
- Reading, Pennsylvania
- Reading has a lovely tower with helpful tower people [tm]. The Wild Wings Cafe has some of the best buffalo wings in the area. Tell them you want to sit in the "grungy pilot's section."
- Frederick, Maryland
- Frederick has a cute little cafe with not bad hamburgers and BLT type fare. They're convenient to GAI and insane ILS practice.
- York, Pennsylvania
- York is a wonderful place to practice NDB approaches. The Cyberflight pilots and their flight instructors are well versed in avoiding the evil hill on one side of the approach (check your Jepps). The restaurant is called Orville's if we recall correctly, and has decent munchies located therein.
- Easton, Maryland
- Easton has pretty decent food, has an NDB that never works right, and is on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Real nice flight over the bay.
- Hagerstown, Maryland
- Nick's is a wonderful restaurant located near the old Piedmont terminal building. They're kind of "upscale" but they'll seat you even if you dress like we do. Steak and seafood type stuff abounds. Hagerstown is a towered airport (except after hours, check your A/FD) so you won't have to worry about some idiot in a Warrior cutting you off on final. Be careful to avoid P-40 on departure.
